One of the things about being a parent, or in this case an uncle is that you can enjoy children’s programming as an adult without people thinking you’re weird. I was an adult when the Muppet Show was on TV, and my nephew was quite young when the movies came out. And then after you die your relatives can find your cartoon porn and realize just how twisted you really were. You need a friend to wipe your hard drive and spare your relatives. A possible exception might be if they’re even more weird than you.

One of those peculiar circumstances occurred after my mom died. It turned out that one of the most valuable things she had was her porn collection. Now doesn’t that sound odd! The Sex to Sexty {magazines/comics whatever you want to call them} turned out to be worth more than her “antiques”. The antiques were old, but not rare, and as a result not valuable.

I started working third shift in 88, I would get home about 9 AM, fix a very large strong drink, sit down and start watching PeeWee and Hey Vern It’s Ernest. At the time I wasn’t married and didn’t have kids, so there wasn’t anybody to witness … I’ll leave it at that. Apparently I was not the only one. Conan commented to Paul Reubens that he had an atypical group of fans, middle aged people who drink or get stoned while watching.

    Such a deal.

Pee Wee always creeped me out. The Muppets, on the other hand, are totally awesome.

I remember going to the theater as a kid to see Muppets Take Manhattan. The movie theater I saw it in was originally a play house. It was converted back to one in later years, and eventually burned down.

When my mother (who has a lot of antiques, but who turns her nose up at nudity ~ probably no hidden porn collection there) called to inform me that the old theater had gone up in flames (I was long gone from home by then), I realized that even though I’d seen (and even been IN) live performances there, the memory that was the strongest for me was going to see that movie.

There is a theater like that here. It started out with stage performances, I think it started in the late 20’s or 30’s. It was converted for movies probably in the 60’s, I remember going to a few films there as a kid. My best memories from there were after it started showing “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Halloweens. Great movie, it’s different every time you see it. How often do you get to yell at the screen? And it was renovated to have stage shows and look like it did in the 30’s. No more Rocky. It had really nice wide fully upholstered chairs, you don’t see that now.
