Evening: Reflections and Refractions

It’s twilight now…

The sun no longer high, the temperature not exactly low…

And I find myself reflecting inward on this space between.

It’s not day, but not quite night…

A gradual time of change, moment by moment, until the sky sparkles with new light…  Dazzling silver against midnight blue.

*

I basked in the sun today…  Reveling in the warmth of the sun’s rays bathing my body with sweet kisses of heat…  Imagination drifting, yet thoughts laser-focused…  And coming a million miles a minute…

Sharing each of them, one heartbeat at a time, like so many petals unfolding.

Each idea a living thing, opening itself up to the nurturing warmth of sunshine.

*

My skin is pink.

I am glowing.

Radiant.

*

Sunshine…

Heat…

Me.

Lovely springtime sunshine imagery! Sometimes kisses from that burning star leave a hickey for you to remember him by. It is nice to be loved with such penetrating intensity.

I haven’t had a hickey since I was 18… But I *did* get sunburned yesterday, regardless of my diligence with sunscreen.

Not exactly a broiled lobster, but…

      Pink. I am definitely pink.

And penetrating…intensity… Yes. Yes, that is lovely imagery, indeed. 😉

I was feeling very much ME yesterday; being the self I always am, yet somehow… More.

      Changed… But not.

Like looking in a mirror and seeing within its reflection a sharper, more detailed reflection.

A pink reflection it was, too. ;). I wore sunscreen, but my skin is fair, and I spent a little too much time outside.

Anymore, looking in a mirror has me wondering, who’s that fat old guy? If I shave then look in the mirror, it’s like, how did my dad get in the mirror? Back in the 60’s my brother bore an uncanny resemblance to this picture of Jesus Ma had. She would put the two pictures next to each other on the shelf. My brother is 13 years older than me, and I don’t remember him living at home. He comes back for a visit every few years. I’m sure he must’ve seen the two pictures side by side. He’s not particularly religious. I don’t think I’d be comfortable looking like the picture.

Anyway, during the 2008 flood, when the entire state of Iowa was under water, I got a horrible sunburn on the top of my head. That was the most difficult hint to ignore about my hair getting thin. Furball has mentioned getting a drivers tan, because one arm gets a lot more sun than the other.

During Basic Training in July and August in Ft Bliss, I looked like one of those old prospectors in the westerns. Red leather like skin with a wild look in the eyes. I drank over a gallon of water a day and I would piss once and it would be almost brown. And I didn’t really sweat. I would crust over with salt. The tee shirts would have white rings because the sweat would evaporate so fast. That chunk of memory lane is full of speed bumps and potholes.

More and more these days, when I look in the mirror, I see my mother staring back at me. And occasionally when I speak, her words come out.

The skin on the top of your head is actually quite different than the skin on your face. That burn must have hurt.

Hydration is sometimes difficult to maintain. I went hiking on Saturday, and even though I drank water (and water and water and more water) all day long, I managed to get a bit dehydrated. The physical demands of basic training combined with the heat of southern summer… Hydration would be a challenge. I can clearly picture the scenario you describe.

Potholes… Bleh. Speed bumps annoy me. They are *everywhere* in these parts. Parking lots, especially. I wonder if little road nuisances like that get under Fur’s half-tanned skin as well?
