The Precipice

…like standing on the edge of a towering cliff, with a violent wind rushing against your face while frothing waves crashed against the jagged rocks below, knowing damn well that your next move would change your life…

…take the step backward to safety…

…or the one so dangerous it could change you forever…

~ Rhyannon Byrd

I’d teeter on the edge of the precipice just for the thrill of hanging in the balance… but I’d eventually embrace the change – just no fun always playing it safe.

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. -Lao Tzu

Thank you. I like this quote. A lot.

      For you:

      Rocks crumble, make new forms,
      oceans move the continents,
mountains rise up and down like ghosts
yet all is natural, all is change.

      ~ Anne Sexton

Also: what the fuck. You are more relevant than ever. Right NOW. It’s like you’re nestled in against my skull, squished between the bone and the brain and you’re just having a bit of a tickle. Yea. It’s actually EXACTLY like that.

A day late, hopefully not a dollar short…

    First:

    Changes. 🙂

    And…

“I wanted change and excitement and to shoot off in all directions myself like the colored arrows from a Fourth of July rocket.”
    –Sylvia Plath

    Lastly…

Change – meaning the future – is scary, because we can see what we’ve done in the past, but we can’t see what’s ahead. But, isn’t that life? Be your own navigator and face what you want rather than what you say you should be. ‘Cause opportunity for change passed by is change in itself. (Now maybe that doesn’t make sense, but maybe it does…)

Somewhere in the distance is a Someone who awaits
For the moment I am taken over
      By the hands of fate…

      Changes, indeed.

      Fireworks, a la Ms. Plath.

And as for opportunity for changed passed by being a form of change… Yes. You make perfect sense. And I will not allow my future to pass me by.

But while the future awaits, I am reveling in the moment… In all the moments, between now and then.

What about waiting on the edge for the tide to come in so the fall won’t be so dangerous?

    Or:

Changes on the front, tidal wave come save me now. Or something…

      A sea change…

Sometimes we must love dangerously to live adventurously.

Jumping off a cliff and stepping into the unknown are two different things.

A man never rises so high as when he knows not whither he is going. (Oliver Cromwell)

I could jump off the wrong part, the wrong ledge, my death will make it all not worth it. What love is worth death!? The only love worth it would be family love, self love, arrg the sea is spraying my face!

It is fascinating to me the way people are interpreting this quote.

It says ‘step’, not ‘jump’. And seeing the potential peril does not mean throwing one’s self onto the jagged edges to bleed and die. Why not climb down carefully, as one does along the Oregon coastline?

This quote ~ while applicable to many things and open to considerably vast interpretations ~ was describing a very specific first step. Perhaps eventually I will share more specifically what Ms Byrd had in mind when she wrote this.

Yes, please keep sharing. It goes to show how fear driven my thinking has become, it all feels like a leap. I forget the baby steps all too often.
