Okay, so I might be slightly OCD.

Which, combined with my ADD, means I will obsess over a puzzle until all the pieces click into place, or until…

SQUIRL!

Errr…

And when I have someone else who chases their own tail the way I do (not that I’m naming names), I can sort of be a bit like a dog with a bone.

I do like bones.  (Yes, that’s a euphemism.)  Not that I’m anything like a dog, really.  I mean, sure, I’m a little furry.  But I totally do not shit on the lawn.

Nor do I drool.  Much.

Unless I happen to be deep sleeping.  Or deep throating.  Cuz…y’know…lube.  And whatnot.

But I digress.

Okay people, listen up!

If your blog contains MATURE CONTENT (which is rather nebulously defined by the WordPress Terms of Service, and contains wording like ‘pornographic images’ without explicitly defining what the fuck that means to the WP Powers That Be), the following instructions are geared toward you.

First, back your shit up.  To summarize, for those of you who get distracted by following link trails, this is what you do:

  1. From the left side bar of you Dashboard, mouse over ‘Tools’ and click ‘Export’.
  2. Two options will appear:  ‘Export’ and ‘Guided Transfer’.  Choose ‘Export’.
  3. From the Export page, click ‘All Content’, then ‘Download Export File’.
  4. Once your file has downloaded, you will have the option to either open or save the .xml file.  Save it, via ‘Save As’ and stow it away on your computer someplace where you can easily find it.  (I keep mine in my ‘Blog’ folder ~ go figure.)

After you have done that, you have the option to set up a ‘live’ backup of sorts.  You can import your .xml file into either (1) a separate, private WP domain, or (2) another blog host format, such as Xanga or Blogger.  To go with option (1), do the following:

  1. From the ‘My Blogs’ page on WordPress, click ‘Create Another Blog’.
  2. Follow the prompts and mark your privacy settings as ‘Private’.
  3. From the Dashboard of your new blog site, mouse over ‘Tools’ and click ‘Import’.
  4. Choose ‘WordPress’.
  5. Upload your saved .xml file.  It can take up to 24 hours for everything to show up.

From there forward, if you want to keep a complete mirror of your grown-up blog (Blog 1) on your private blog (Blog 2), all you have to do when you post something new is copy it from the ‘Add a New Post’ draft page of Blog 1 and paste it to the ‘Add a New Post’ draft page of Blog 2.

Some sage advice and timely, a blog I follow has disappeared under the auspicious WP terms of Service.
I made the decision to self host a few months back and I am glad I did it, now I don’t have to worry about someone looking over my shoulder.
