I had to play this during a recital; I recognized the score without having to listen to it. God, I was so nervous that my hands and fingers were sweating and kept slipping on the keys! But I got through it although, as public performances go, it wasn’t one of my better ones.
I practiced this for hours before the recital until it was second nature to me; the moment I sat down at the Steinway provided for the recital, I suddenly had no idea what the notes were telling me! All I could think was, “Please don’t screw it up! Don’t screw it up!”
And, to make it worse, this piece was chosen for me – I would have elected to go with something by Bach…
I empathize.
