BLUE HERON
This is one of my favorite kinds of birds.
As with other ornithological creatures that fascinate me, rarely am I in a position to photograph one. (Or perhaps *they* aren’t in the proper position to BE photographed. They do have a propensity for flying away.)
This one didn’t exactly sit still for me while I fumbled about for my camera (with all the cautious quietude of a slam-dancing elephant ~ “Look!!!” I squee-shouted to my spouse as I ran for the rock shore, “Look Look LOOK!!!“), but I managed – out of 16 rapidly clicked cameraphone photos – to frame a few halfway decent shots…
And one unexpectedly awesome one.
I’m not so into birds that I will be rushing out to buy binoculars and guide books any time soon, but I sure love to watch them when they come by to visit. And herons really are a lovely bird…

I’m the same way. Binoculars? No. But I love watching the small birds that populate our neighborhood in the spring and summer, and we are treated to a variety of raptors in this area as well; research has found that people’s sense of peace/well-being increases correlative to their exposure to birds, and I well believe it. 🙂
I love Blue Herons. They are so majestic. When they take off or land it is a thing of beauty. I’ve had some great chances to shoot them—when I don’t have my camera. Somehow they seem to know when I do have my camera and they are far less cooperative!

I think all animals are like that, even (especially?) domestic ones. *laugh*
“Oh, you think you can just take my picture and I’ll just stand here in the perfect pose? Think again, human!” 😉
Congrats– they are tough to photograph!
He was giving me the eye the whole time, I swear. You know the look. The “I’m only indulging your ridiculous human-ness right now because my lunch is swimming my way while you watch” look.
But hey, I’ll take it! 😀
Birds can be very uncooperative, so either way, you win !!!!!!!!
