Kayso… NEW GAME.
*laugh*
It’s called Semantle. (<— That link will take you to the explanation page and allow you to play.)
And it’s CRAZY-MAKING.
(But if you’re into Saying What You Mean and Not Accepting Imprecise Substitutions — like me — it’s crazy good.)
The basic premise is…
There is a word.
You have to guess the word.
*laugh*
It can be ANY word.
Like, it can be a noun or a verb (or a gerund, heh) or whatever.
And your guesses are a matter of: Semantically, how close are you to the word of the day?
It ranks the 1,000 (on thousand!) closest words and lets you know when you are ‘getting warm’ by greening in how close you are to the exact word as you go. In the game I was playing above, I was lucky. I hit on one of the thousandth-closest words at Guess #8:
In this case, ‘create’ was the 541st closest semantic match to the word of the day (lend). So, having that to work from, my guesses got me to the answer in 51 tries.
“Fifty-one tries?!”
(You don’t have to shout it.)
Yes. *laugh*
And that’s my best score yet! Sometimes it takes me over 300 entries before I get to the answer.
: waits while the air of collective befuddlement lifts :
*laugh*
I know. I know.
But it’s FUN.
And it ranks your responses in order of how close you are, right? So once you start to get a few ranked, you can detect a pattern. Like, in the results I’m putting in this post, ‘underwrite’ was damn close and ‘contribute’ even closer. ‘Give’ was closer still, but given ‘underwrite’ I figured it had to do with banking (this is all visible in the top image) and voila!
Anywhoo…
I’m meant to be writing a reflections post for my A-to-Z project but I’m super late to the party on that one and haven’t decided on how (or if) I want to write it yet. But THIS?
This, my friends, HAD TO BE SHARED.
*laughing*
It’s okay if you think I’m crazy. 😉
I’m crazy about words. 😛
I will not try, I will not try…
*grin*
I did get close but then gave up. Sigh.
I have given up a few Times myself!
I’ve learned that you can get a hint, and have started using that feature around try #250. The hint is typically a little bit closer than your own closest.
Oh dear, I feel an obsession coming on myself. I’m not sure I should thank you or not for sharing this. 🙂
Hahaha! Yes, it’s a toss up! 😉
Hi, Feve! I am sorry I didn’t get here sooner, but I’ve been playing Semantle since you posted about it. LOL I played before bedtime the last 2 nights. Interesting for sure. I’m sure it’s very good for my aging brain. I think of all the high class words you might be entering and just laugh at my pitiful ones. haha
Hugs,
Windy

I am totally hit and miss with my words. The fancy ones seem not to get me very close, as a general rule. 😉
I’m NOT going to click on that link. I love word games, and I spend way too much time brain-training as it is haha.
Oh, but the temptation!
Hehehee…;)
I got to try this – I play Octordle about 5 times a week and didn’t realise how much i enjoy word games
They are a fun challenge, aren’t they? 🙂

Now I will just have to try this too. I play Wordle and Octordle daily, and now will have to try this one too! Thanks for the tip 🙂

Have fun with it!
