Pleasantly Difficult

We snuggle together, limbs lightly covered with a worn and tattered blanket, my cheek against his shoulder, his chin resting atop my head.

Birds of a feather, snug in our nest.

He asks, “Has it really been eighteen years?”

I nod, my cheek nuzzling his soft t-shirt, the comforting texture felt against my skin upon movement making me want to repeat it.

“It doesn’t seem like any time at all,” he says.

I smile at that. Because the time overall has flown… But it’s also been a long damn time.

“I can’t believe it,” he says. “The time has flown by.”

“That’s because,” I explain, “I’m so easy.”

“Well, I wouldn’t say that,” he counters.

Turning My Cheek

pre-cancerous treated spot on cheek at Day 26 of treatment

I think this is improving!

I nearly titled this post “rehab” because today makes 28 days. *laugh*

But the photo above was actually taken on Day 26.

The spot on my cheek is definitely on the ‘rehab’ upswing though — it took several tries to even get it to show on camera. (It’s still clearly visible to the naked eye. Cameras just do funny things.) Can you see it? Under my eye, on my cheek. It looks a bit gray-ish in this photo, but in actuality what you’re seeing is the end of a scab-over process. (The light scab peeled yesterday, leaving a pinkish new-skin mark underneath.)

I was supposed to use my chemo cream for 21 days. I stopped after 18, however, because by that time it had peeled off several layers of scab-over skin and was feeling quite raw. (Not to mention, it was looking a bit scary.) And since the chemo basically irritates it… Well, let’s just say that putting an irritant on raw skin is not my idea of a good time.

So at Day 18, I called it good.

At Day 26, the last(?) light-layer scab was showing. (As above.)

In which, the gynecologist gets ALL UP in my bizness.

FAIR WARNING: As should be obvious from that ^^^ title, this post is about a recent gynecological examination I underwent (due to my ongoing experiences with vaginal pain). Please decide whether to read on or to click away accordingly.

A Bit of Background

Those of you who read me on the reg are already familiar with the basics; those of you who are new here or who only stop by intermittently may appreciate a broad-strokes background against which to paint their own picture of the most recent happenings in this arena.

SO

Once upon a time, I had a pretty high sex drive. I have (had?) PCOS, one of the typical symptoms of which is a high testosterone level. Since testosterone is the hormone that drives sexual response in both males and females, and since my testosterone was high… Well, my sex drive was high. This meant I desired sex — was interested in it, was ready for it (on very little notice and with barely any stimulation1) — on a pretty high level, and that I participated in sex/ual activities pretty frequently.

Then I turned 40.

Animalistic Pleasures

The ABC of Bumptious Beasts, by Gail Kredenser and Stanley Mack

Now that I’ve lured you in with that click-bait title…

*laugh*

LOOK at this amazing ABC book I found recently on one of my used book store treasure hunts!

It is an alphabet book, consisting of delightful line drawings and semi-silly poems representing animals of all letters of the alphabet.

And I mean… I wasn’t kidding about the ‘animalistic’ bit:

RAWR

Amiright?!

Seriously though — the detail in the line drawings, even if cartoon-ish, is a delight to the eyes. And the poems, somewhat reminiscent of Seuss and Silversetein but uniquely a style all their own, are just plain fun.

I am working my way through several books right now — many of which are mysteries, all of which are being read at varying paces — but I spent two nights recently, just… savoring… this biblio delight.

How could I *not*?

It gives you instructions for maintaining a pet dragon!

D is for Dragon

And if, by chance, dragons are not your beast of choice, just flip a page and read in your most stentorian voice:

The aardvark is a nosy beast
With a sniffley, snuffley snoot;
He comes out at night for his evening feast,
A shuffling, whuffling brute.

Aa is most educational, I declare! It leaves you wondering as it goes on, whether aardvarks happen to wear underwear.

(Which, of course, is one of the reasons I love this book. *laugh*)

Do tell — I’d love to hear!

I often interpret meme prompts…differently…than they are, perhaps, intended.

This time, however, the weekly prompt for Wicked Wednesday was Favorite Books.

I have many. But I know the more lighthearted regulars among you will not be surprised that *this* is my newest (and current favoritest) one. 😉
