Animalistic Pleasures

The ABC of Bumptious Beasts, by Gail Kredenser and Stanley Mack

Now that I’ve lured you in with that click-bait title…

*laugh*

LOOK at this amazing ABC book I found recently on one of my used book store treasure hunts!

It is an alphabet book, consisting of delightful line drawings and semi-silly poems representing animals of all letters of the alphabet.

And I mean… I wasn’t kidding about the ‘animalistic’ bit:

RAWR

Amiright?!

Seriously though — the detail in the line drawings, even if cartoon-ish, is a delight to the eyes. And the poems, somewhat reminiscent of Seuss and Silversetein but uniquely a style all their own, are just plain fun.

I am working my way through several books right now — many of which are mysteries, all of which are being read at varying paces — but I spent two nights recently, just… savoring… this biblio delight.

How could I *not*?

It gives you instructions for maintaining a pet dragon!

D is for Dragon

And if, by chance, dragons are not your beast of choice, just flip a page and read in your most stentorian voice:

The aardvark is a nosy beast
With a sniffley, snuffley snoot;
He comes out at night for his evening feast,
A shuffling, whuffling brute.

Aa is most educational, I declare! It leaves you wondering as it goes on, whether aardvarks happen to wear underwear.

(Which, of course, is one of the reasons I love this book. *laugh*)

What books are you loving right now?

Do tell — I’d love to hear!

I often interpret meme prompts…differently…than they are, perhaps, intended.

This time, however, the weekly prompt for Wicked Wednesday was Favorite Books.

I have many. But I know the more lighthearted regulars among you will not be surprised that *this* is my newest (and current favoritest) one. 😉

Wow! What a fabulous book. I shall see if I can track it down to share with my boys.

I’m currently loving Battle Scars, by Jason Fox. I’m not much of a cry-er, but my eyes have let rip big fat tears three times. Now I’m looking for my next read.

I have a love/hate relationship with books that pull tears from me. I recently read the bittersweet last novel in the Discworld series, and I don’t think I had dry eyes more than twice through the entire thing.

I like the look of it. I may put that on my list to track down, but to be honest, my absolute FAVORITE “ABC” book has to be Edward Gorey’s “Gashleycrumb Tinies”.

Fun book! I learned a few years ago that there’s a fancy word for ABC books — abecedary. And, somehow, knowing the fancy word has made me more fascinated by them.

I’m enjoying The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow which has a good share of the fantastical and a great appreciation for books.

      Abecedary — fun word! 🙂

I just did a quick search for your book. It’s a great title, and some of the quotes readers have highlighted make me think it’s one I’d like. I will put it on my “look-for” list next time I visit the book store. 🙂
