Reminiscences: Musings in Memoir — Prompt #6

PROMPT #6 — SPACE

In the space between chaos and shape there was another chance.

Jeanette Winterson

.

Space: It can be cramped and narrow, vast and far-reaching, confining or freeing. Space, in the physical sense, takes on the characteristics of both emptiness and fullness, and can either be encroached-upon or explored. In the emotional sense, space can be a distancing or a mindset of seeking. And then, of course, there is the concept of ‘space’ as ‘the universe’, encompassing planets, moons, asteroids, stars, black holes, and all manner of unknown frontier.*

What happens in Vegas…

10 Comments on What happens in Vegas…

I had no idea at the time how big a deal it would be. No way of knowing how important it was, in the grand scheme of things. How a tiny slice of time would prove to be monumental, both in terms of helping me {1} move on from a relationship that was finished (but not — it’s hard to truly be ‘finished’ when you’re still sharing a house), and {2} determine how I would (or, more accurately, would NOT) conduct myself in terms of sex and communication in my relationships to come.

They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

But what happened to me in Vegas has followed me (and led me) for many years after it was over.

Reminiscences: Musings in Memoir — Prompt #5

PROMPT #5 — BIG

I live by ‘Go big or go home.’ That’s with everything. It’s like either commit and go for it or don’t do it at all. I apply that to everything.

Paul Walker

.

Big: It is a word that moves in three dimensions — tall, wide, deep — and applies equally to empty spaces and solid objects. Bigness can indicate breadth (of knowledge, for instance) or vastness (think: ocean), comparative height/weight/age (big, bigger, biggest), or indicate scope (a big project). In terms of largeness, you can have big ideas, big problems, a big budget, or big plans. You can talk a big game, run a big business, or be A Big Deal.

Some of the ways ‘big’ applies in everyday life include:

  • Being a big fish in a small pond is being a person with a lot of “bigness” of power relative to the smallness of one’s community.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters is a an American nonprofit organization that pairs adult volunteers with community youth for the purpose of mentorship and support.
  • If you do something that has far-reaching or highly impactful negative consequences, it may be referred to as causing (or being in) big trouble.
