(in which, Feve may be mistaken for having a God complex)

Quite some time ago, I composed a playlist comprised of F/m-style D/s songs.  I have long meant to build on to that list, but what with the lack of inspiration from the currently-available musical pop/rock/country catalog, it’s been back-burner-ed for a bit.

And then I found religion.  (Not literally.  But you’ll see what I mean in a moment.)  Which got me listening to a few old tunes with newly attuned ears.  😉

So for those of you who are into this sort of thing and/or who are looking to broaden your psychology-of-relationships musical palate, below is a list of individual songs (titles linked) with lyrical samplings to taste.

(And for those of you who are more of the “Just feed me a big ol’ musical meal” mindset:  Scroll to the bottom for the single-click playlist.  🙂 )

So without further ado…

F/m Playlist:  Part Deux

Bring Me To Life by Evanescence:  My take on this may smack slightly of a God/dess complex (as in, the lyrics: breathe into me and make me real), but the idea of ‘waking up’ and ‘bringing to life’ – post D/s- or power-exchange-discovery – where desire is concerned…  Yes.  This makes SO MUCH sense to me.  And the fact that it’s a male-female vocal duo performing this version (the song is available in multiple formats, including a monkish-type ritual chant – which humors me – but I first heard it courtesy of Amy Lee’s vocals and have loved it ever since) just further underlines the life-feeding, awakening pleasure that can be found on both sides (and when switching sides) in F/m.

How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
Leading you down, into my core
Where I’ve become so numb, without a soul
My spirit’s sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there, and lead it, back, home

Shameless by John Marshall (who is covering Garth Brooks, who in turn covered Billy Joel):  My paramour suggested this song after I posted my first list, and I think this version covers the spirit of the message within better than its predecessors’ did.

I don’t break easy, I have my pride
But if you need to be satisfied
I’m shameless, baby I don’t have a prayer
Anytime I see you standing there
I go down upon my knees
And I’m changing, I swore I’d never compromise
But you convinced me otherwise
I’ll do anything you please

Personal Jesus by Johnny Cash:  There’s just something about the scratch-beat on an old Martin, sung in an even older scratch-beat voice that gives me the feels.  I don’t think I’m Jesus (though I kinda like the guy; it’s the people who do idiotic things in His name that I dislike), but having had F/m relationships with men who’ve experienced a loss of faith – in love, in the potential for growth in a relationship, in their ability to please a woman – and seeing that faith restored…  Yes.  It fits.  Perhaps most especially in my long distance relationship endeavors.  🙂

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there
Feeling unknown
And you’re all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I’ll make you a believer

Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) by Hillsong UNITED:  I tried to soften you into the ‘religious’ leaning of some of the songs on this list, but if you’re feeling uncomfortable or the parallels offend your sensibilities, then this might be a good one for you to skip.  This whole song is about faith.  About calling upon the name of Jesus (though, in the F/m context I’m expounding upon, replace ‘Jesus’ with ‘Fever’ and you’ll get the gist), about trusting and being led deeper into the waters one cannot keep their head above alone (Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders / Let me walk upon the waters / Wherever you would call me).  This would be a bit more contextually effective if it was being sung by a man, but none of the male-vocal ones I found quite did it justice.

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand
And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Whatever it Takes by Imagine Dragons:  I had to break a tie between this song and Make Me A Believer; I like the band, but my OCD makes it a bit un-do-able to have two songs by the same group on a single list.  😉  They’re both worth a listen, but these are the lyrics that won out…

Whip, whip
Run me like a racehorse
Pull me like a ripcord
Break me down and build me up
I wanna be the slip, slip
Word upon your lip, lip
Letter that you rip, rip
Break me down and build me up
Whatever it takes
‘Cause I love the adrenaline in my veins

Next To Me by Emily Sandé:  Because this, to me, is what “being on his best behavior” is all about — no fucking around, no lies, no drama or unfaithfulness or rudeness or toxic vice.  Next to me – supporting me any way he can – is where he should *want* to be.

You won’t find him trying to chase the devil
For money, fame, for power, out of grief
You won’t ever find him where the rest go
You will find him, you’ll find him next to me

Amazing Grace (to the tune of House of the Rising Sun) by Amy Jo Blanton:  Again — very much a ‘God’ song, but with the grace that’s required (acceptance, absolution, reclaiming, renewing, forgiving) to manage individual foibles in relationships such as the ones I pursue…  Yes, it fits.  (And no, my name’s not Grace.  😉 )

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Bend Me, Shape Me by The American Breed:  This is another that made the list by way of a partner’s suggestion.  Because, adorbs.

Bend me, shape me
Any way you want me
Long as you love me, it’s all right
Bend me, shape me
Any way you want me
You got the power to turn on the light

Short Skirt, Long Jacket by CAKE:  This is a slightly switchy song, to my way of thinking, but I love-love-LOVE IT.  And for those who of you who are feeling a need for a bit of comedic relief, this is just the tune.  😉  Rather than copy a chunk of lyrics for you, I’ll just give you a few of my favorite lines.

  • I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
  • Who’s fast, thorough, and sharp as a tack
  • Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
  • With fingernails that shine like justice
  • And a voice that is dark like tinted glass

I want a girl with a short skirt and a loooooong… jacket

Love Me Like A River Does by Melody Gardot:  More of a tender-sex love song than anything, but – despite occasional appearances to the contrary 😉 – I can, at times, be very much in that kind of mood with my men.  Somehow, it just fits.  🙂

I like the DP original (and doesn’t *that* sound naughty?) and I once heard a rock-y-er version that I quite liked, though I couldn’t tell you who covered it. It had a very NIN vibe though, which worked for me. 🙂

    Royals by Lorde
Not money but power is my goal
    Ending:
We’re bigger than we ever dreamed
And I’m in love with being queen
    Oooooh ooooh ohhhhh
Life is great without a care
We aren’t caught up in your love affair
And we’ll never be royals (royals)
It don’t run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain’t for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me Queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule
    Let me live that fantasy
