Lunchtime Listening

Those of you who read here regularly will know that if there is one thing I enjoy playing with (besides my husband) it is words. I have been known to write an entire piece of fiction centered around a pun, for instance. My sense of humor is largely based in the {mis}use/{re}application of language; my spouse knows he can make me laugh with a well-placed deadpan bit of linguistical nonsense, and it delights me to no end to see my young niece already using these skills with alacrity.

So I’m sure you can imagine my gratified grin at hearing, on the classical radio station I listen to, an unexpected play on words when I had the rare opportunity to listen at noon one day and heard the announcer invite us all to take a seat and enjoy our Bach’s lunch.

Bach’s lunch.

BOX LUNCH!

Baaahaahaha!

I laughed out loud.

And then I enjoyed some Bach while I listened to ate my lunch. 😉

We always have the radio on softly and since I sit right next to it, I hear the most. So many times it happens that I am the one laughing out loud because of what I hear – love the play on words – and then have to try and explain the joke to Master T. It never works, but I still have fun!

It can be hard to explain, even when it’s obvious why it should be funny. Humor often hits our funny bone because it’s so “in the moment” — trying to redo/retell that moment… It loses something in the translation.

BIKSS and I play with our words with each other ALL the time. It’s probably one of the main reasons we were able to stay friends over the decades – a shared bit of fun.

And I quite enjoy a Bach suite every now and again.

I like his piano exercises — inventions, preludes, and fugues — as well as some of his cantatas. I think a lot of people gravitate to the Brandenburg Concertos; I’m not entirely sure I’m pulled in that direction, but one nice thing about Bach as a composer is that there are so many forks in the musical road. 🙂
